“Purpose” – A documentary premiere that challenges our economic worldview (ENG/SV)

What if we stopped organizing society around GDP—and started asking what the economy is really for?Purpose is a journey through today’s evolving world of economic ideas—and a story about courage.

The documentary follows two pivotal and interesting years in the lives of political economists Katherine Trebeck and Lorenzo Fioramonti as they step into bold political initiatives aimed at helping societies rethink how they see themselves. Interwoven with the personal reflections of director Martin Oetting, we witness their struggles and breakthroughs as they attempt to spark systemic change.

Katherine is the force behind the “Wellbeing Economy Governments” initiative—an international alliance of countries ready to reimagine policy and offer alternatives to the dominant narratives of the G7. We watch her tenaciously fight for the cause as countries like Scotland, New Zealand, Iceland, Wales, and Finland join the movement.

Lorenzo, meanwhile, supports the founding of the alliance while navigating the political arena in Italy. We see him move from policy advocacy to holding office—ultimately becoming Minister for Education, where he gains the power to implement some of his ideas.

Purpose isn’t just a political exposé—it’s an intimate and emotional reflection on what it means to challenge deeply embedded systems. Through the personal journeys of its protagonists, the film invites us to ask: What is the true purpose of our economy? Who is it really serving? And what becomes possible when we start building systems that serve life instead of markets?

But perhaps the most powerful thing about Purpose isn’t what it shows—it’s how it moves. Rather than chasing big premieres or one-time viewings, the filmmakers have chosen a different path: partnering with grassroots organizations, local networks, and community leaders to host relational screenings—film nights designed for reflection, dialogue, and connection. This, too, is an act of systemic courage: not just challenging the narrative of the economy, but reimagining how stories themselves are shared. Cultivating transformation through context and co-creation—not through clicks, hype, or speed.

PURPOSE - en dokumentär som utmanar hur vi ser på ekonomi

Vad händer när vi slutar orientera oss utifrån BNP och istället börjar fråga oss vad själva syftet med vår ekonomi är? Dokumentären Purpose är en resa genom nutidens ekonomiska idévärldar och en berättelse om mod.

Dokumentären följer två år i politiska ekonomerna Katherine Trebecks och Lorenzo Fioramontis liv, när de ger sig in i ambitiösa politiska projekt för att få våra samhällen att förändra synen på sig själva. Varvat med regissören Martin Oettings personliga erfarenheter får vi följa deras upp- och nedgångar. Katherine har initierat "Wellbeing Economy Governments", en internationell allians som är redo att omforma sin politik och erbjuda alternativ till samtalen inom G7. Vi får följa hur hon envist sliter för sitt projekt och hur det utvecklas i takt med att Skottland, Nya Zeeland, Island, Wales och Finland ansluter sig.

Lorenzo hjälper till att starta alliansen och navigerar politiken i Italien. Vi följer hur han går från lobbying till att bli utrikesminister och faktiskt får möjlighet att genomföra några av sina idéer.

Purpose är inte bara en politisk exposé – det är också en naken och emotionell betraktelse över individer som kämpar i ett system och vad som händer när vi vågar släppa taget om det invanda. Genom att följa huvudpersonernas personliga kamp väcker filmen frågor som: Vad är egentligen syftet med vår ekonomi? Vem tjänar på den? Och vad händer när vi börjar bygga system som tjänar livet istället för marknaden?

Det mest intressanta med Purpose är kanske inte vad den visar, utan hur den rör sig. Istället för att jaga stora premiärer eller engångsvisningar har skaparna valt en annan väg. De samarbetar med lokala aktörer, gräsrotsorganisationer och nätverk för att skapa relationella visningar – filmkvällar med samtal och frön till fördjupning. Detta är i sig ett systemiskt mod: att inte bara utmana berättelsen om ekonomin – utan också hur berättelser själva får spridas. Att odla förändring genom sammanhang och samskapande – inte genom klick, hype och snabb konsumtion.
